About Kris

My freelance writing career was launched by actor DeForest Kelley in 1969. De and his wife Carolyn encouraged me to try Hollywood on for size, which I did from 1989 to 2003.

In Hollywood, I served as an administrative assistant and secretarial floater to writers, producers and—later—information technology professionals at various studios. Most of my Hollywood career was spent at Warner Bros. Studios.

I served as De’s personal assistant and caregiver during the final months of his life in 1999 and presented heartfelt sentiments about him at Paramount Studios' memorial service for him. I’ve written two books about him: DeForest Kelley Up Close and Personal, A Harvest of Memories from the Fan Who Knew Him Best (2016) and The Enduring Legacy of DeForest Kelley: Actor, Healer, Friend, an e-book (available only as an exclusive offer via opt-in).

From 1981 to 1985 I served as Field Representative and (later) Field Services Representative for the humane education organization Animal Protection Institute in Sacramento, California (presently named Born Free). I also served as Executive Director for API’s investigation/education branch, Humane Educator’s Council.

The author of eight books, my sixth title, Serval Son: Spots and Stripes Forever—a cautionary true story about what it’s like to own, and be owned by, a wild cat for seventeen years—reached the #2 and #4 spots at Amazon in two niche categories when it debuted in September 2011.

My 2012 title, Settle for Best: Satisfy the Winner You Were Born to Be contains encouragement and instructions to entrepreneurs and anyone else who wants to leave a business, personal, or family legacy that will resonate for generations to come. Settle for Best stood at #1 in the Motivational Self-Help category at Amazon for three days when it debuted.

An earlier title, Let No Day Dawn that the Animals Cannot Share, recently re-released,  is a book of “prosetry” (prose and poetry) about various animals I have known and loved and about the crises facing wild animals across the globe, including elephants and chimpanzees in Africa, harp seals in Nova Scotia, and wolves in Alaska and other places. (You’ll occasionally find excerpts from that book in this blog, with notations letting you know.)

I love dancing with words and interacting with other animal lovers (hint, hint!)…
